Why Indian civil service is one of the toughest to crack?
The Indian Civil Services Examination (CSE), conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) once a year, is considered one of the toughest exams in the world due to plethora of reasons:
1. Vast Syllabus
- The syllabus covers a wide range of subjects, including history, geography, polity, economics, science, environment, and ethics.
- Candidates also need to stay updated on current affairs, requiring daily newspaper reading and analysis.
- Most of the syllabus of exam does not follow from the academic studies making it difficult to comprehend the syllabus in a short span of time.
2. Multiple Stages of Examination
- Preliminary Exam (Objective) – Tests general knowledge, aptitude, and current affairs.
- Mains Exam (Descriptive) – Includes nine papers, testing in-depth knowledge, analytical skills, and writing ability.
- Personality Test (Interview) – Assesses personality, decision-making, and communication skills.
3. High Competition
- Every year, around 10-12 lakh candidates apply, but only about 1,000 make it to the final list, making the selection ratio extremely low.
- For unreserved seats competition is more tougher because all groups can claim a seat in this category.
4. Unpredictability & Dynamic Nature
- The exam pattern and question types often change, making it difficult to predict trends.
- Prelims and mains have different requirements and the exam is held within 3 months of mains.
- Candidates must be adaptive and develop a holistic understanding rather than rely on rote learning.
5. Long Preparation Time
- Serious aspirants prepare for 1–3 years before attempting the exam.
- Too much of syllabus has interdisciplinary subject areas.
- Consistent hard work, discipline, and perseverance are required.
6. Subjective Evaluation in Mains
- Unlike objective exams, UPSC Mains answers are evaluated based on depth, clarity, structure, and argumentation, making it highly subjective.
- A well-written answer can make a significant difference in marks.
7. Elaborate Interview Process
- The interview panel tests candidates on their knowledge, personality, ethics, and ability to handle pressure.
- Questions can be unexpected, requiring presence of mind and confidence.
